I know, Blade is hero roleplaying, designed to portray formidable people like Conan, Indiana Jones or Imaro. But is it possible to play the game with less powerful characters?

We play Blade for some time now and everything is fine. The problem I as the GM encounter is: Four extraordinary heros in one group are hard to challenge. So I thought, maybe next time, our group should be a bit less powerful.

What do you think, does that work with the rules? What should be done to make the PCs slightly weaker? Reduce the points that go with the Priorities? By what? 10 percent, more? Or is this nonsense?

B, C, C, D, E, F instead of A, B, C, D, E, F.

Indeed I haven’t. For the rare occurrences when I want to play low-power Sim-style I have not yet chosen Blade, and probably wouldn’t.

Still, it should work fine. But note that, as D is average and B mirrors (i.e. balances the disadvantage of F) and one C mirrors E, those characters are only really slightly superior to common guys, by one single C Priority. Seeing that outside of the genre of Sword 6 Sorcery the concept of the “flawed hero” isn’t as important anymore, one might use either B, C, D, D, E, E or maybe B, C, C, D, D, F instead.

But you can play around and easily find the balance that suits your palate.

On an entirely personal note I’d like to say that I could still enjoy the slower and lower style of gaming I did as a teenager, when I gamed 60+ times a year, with every session lasting seven to ten hours. With sessions that long and frequent, stuff still did happen, the plot did progress, and PCs did get powerful. And I recall that it was deeply enjoyable seeing my PC progress from practically lowly wizard’s apprentice to wielding petrification spells and other cool archmage-like stuff. Nowadays the problem just is that, with my (still quite good) adult rate of gaming of maybe twice a month with sessions lasting five to six hours tops, it would take us ages of real time to get there…
