Hello everybody,

here’s a quick question about wounds: Is there any in-game effect of lesser wounds — wounds that, after reducing Pain by TY, don’t affect the PC in combat? I couldn’t find anything in the book. If not, why bother writing down the wounds at all or bother with healing throws? Can you just ignore them?

Thanks,
R.

The key is ‘in combat’. They still need to be healed and stack enough you could still argue for skill and attribute penalties. So once the adrenaline stop pumping you are going to feel saw. I am fairly sure TY does not come of healing pain, so even the smaller wounds have to be healed.

Skill and attribute penalties only come from Pain that exceeds TY. Lesser wounds have no game effect, if I’m not mistaken. Even after the fight they can be ignored, ’cause it doesn’t matter when or if they are healed. I’m not sure, if that’s something that needs to be houseruled.

AFAIK wounds that are ignored by TY still come in play when you get attacked in the same area, so they are still important to note it down. That is, when you are attacked in a wounded area, you suffer the highest shock value, new or old (pg. 141).

So, as per my interpretation: You have an old wound level II in the Thigh (pain 4 shock 2) that is ignored by your TY 6. In any case, lets say you get hit in the thigh again but you soaked with armor and brawn down to no damage, yet, since you were struck in a wounded area, you suffer 2 shock still, equal to your old wound.

I’m not sure if wounds re-open when they are stricken again — which would reset healing, but I guess its up to the ref.

Negligible wounds that bear no shock value are, well, negligible.

Anarak’s right, but there is also something else to consider about wounds. To quote myself extensively from this thread here:

Michael wrote:
When adrenalin is pumping and and we need to grit our teeth because our survival depends on it — that’s what Pain and TY do a reasonably decent job of simulating. But once we are relatively at rest we really start to feel that pain we didn’t have time to feel before.

But the thing is — when we are at ease, when we are not under stress, when there’s little at stake we don’t even roll the dice in Blade, because we are after all simulating adventure fiction and not real life. So a person with minor and middling ailments all “soaked up” by TY would still be in considerable pain — but he would be able to ignore the pain when it matters.

And that’s what TY soaking up all Pain means. Being able to, when it matters, grit your teeth completely against the pain and performing well in spite of it. It does not mean feeling no pain, it does not mean not being in pain. A player who portrays such a character as if there was no pain at all would be very mistaken, and the referee should advise him that even big bad bastards when wounded go easy on themselves when they can.

So the in-game effect of lesser wounds is mainly a narrative one, not so much a mechanical one. Even though Anarak is right about the mechanical effects of not completely healed wounds, even minor ones, being re-attacked. The intention is, in my words above, to get even big bastards to go easy on themselves when they can — but to allow them to function properly when they need to and are not yet completely mangled.

Yep, that too. Its one thing climbing a mountain while shot at by cannibals and another having a tore on your belly but with clenched teeth you still climb nonetheless. Since scene framing is important in Blade (and dareisay in most if not all games), wounds are a good metric to decide if your next scene is worth or not framing, or if you are overextending a boring scene.

Still on the narrative, It’s cool to know just how MANY scars your characters end up as their careers advance. All level 3+ wounds I add to a “scar list” just for flavour.

Ah, this rule I forgot. This is indeed a mechanical effect, if only a minor one. Thanks for pointing it out.

So here is the core of my question: Why writing down and make healing rolls for wounds that have no mechanical effect? Anarak mentioned a minor effect, ok. But I guess, I tell the players just to note that they have a wound at a specific location, adjust a time for healing and advice them that their heros should take it a bit easier for a time.

They do have a mechanic effect when you are rewounded in the same location before being fully healed.

This is of course minor, so I’d say you are entirley justified to waive all healing rolls for lesser wounds when there passes sufficient downtime and only roll for major wounds. But when the action is ongoing, without downtime, also minor wounds need to be kept track of — not so much for the fluff of being wounded, as this could be done without mechanics by common sense only, but for the contingency of being re-wounded.

Do we only count the highest BL value afflicting an area for the purposes of both the BN check AND later Healing?

I was under the impression that only the highest BL level for a general area was contested for the BN check, but later Healing checks were needed for the BL of ALL the wounds to the same Area/Zone (not accumulated, just rolled against separately).

Which is correct?
