For example, using “Muskelmasse” for Brawn, while a decent translation, is an example of how I wouldn’t wanna do it; no ring, no atmosphere, no nothing.

And sounds like something Popeye the Sailorman would say.

Hi Guys,

I should have responded to this thread earlier. Yes, we’re going to have a character sheet up on here. It will be handled as a PDF form. The text labels on the PDF form will be taken from an XML file that lives in the same folder as the PDF form. You can edit this XML file with an ordinary text editor and change the labels — thus allowing people to create (and share!) their own translations. You won’t be able to edit the images or the positioning of things on the form, but you will be able to change the words.

There is still the potential for problems — a short English word being replaced by a long Spanish word might cause a problem for the layout when it is printed. We’ll do our best to provide as much space as possible for the text labels in the layout.

Regards,
Ian P.

Awesome Ian
Will the form allow saving? (my limited experience with online PDF forms do not allow saving which is a pain…)

Or do you mean the form will be a download instead of live on the site.

Yeah, still a download. So you’ll open the PDF and be able to add a character image, enter your numbers, type in your text, and so on. Then you can save it, print it. But you’ll also be able to edit the XML and change the labels on the form.

Sounds good!

Do you have an idea when you will be able to publish this? As we’re all eager to play ;)

On the topic of German equivalents for the Attribute names:

sorry, can’t seem to post them due to spam filter. I wanted to present a version of them that I made for one of my playtesters last year.

I suggested “List”, “Wagemut”, “Kraft”, “Klugheit”, “Biss” and “Herz” to him. We then changed our minds, however, and rendered them as adjectives instead:

sorry, can’t seem to post them due to issues with the spam filter it seems :(

another attempt, since the spam filter seems to have been amended:

the adjectives we came up with for the Attributes were -

listig
tollkühn
kräftig
klug
hartnäckig
herzlich

maybe they’re of use to someone out there who also has players who are not proficient in English but still wanna understand what their character sheet says ;)

Thank you for your proposals, Auburney.

I dislike those adjectives, as I’m used to nouns as attributes… But your first set of words were good in my opinion. I would only change “List” to “Schneid” ;)

that’s cool, you can of course choose any you like, and change the rest :)

the adjectives idea came up because “cunning” and “daring” can be read both as nouns and as adjectives in the original language. And since many nouns we went through in German felt awkward, we decided to give it a shot rendering them all as adjectives.
We got used to asking the player not “wieviel hast du Kraft/List/whatever?” but rather “wie kräftig/listig/whatever bist du?” pretty quickly, then it was no longer a problem :)

And isn’t “Schneid” more like “Mut”, i.e. courage, i.e. Daring (rather than Cunning)?
It is in Austrian German I believe, but may be differently connoted in varying dialects perhaps?
